Caring for Windows and Doors
Tips for Builders to Share with Homeowners
So you’ve convinced your clients to incorporate high-quality Andersen windows and doors into their design, but don’t stop there. It’s important that they also know how to care for their investment after installation. Here we offer some pointers to pass along to your customers to ensure they get the best performance from their products for many years to come.
Cleaning and Inspecting
It’s a good idea to thoroughly clean the windows, both inside and out, at least once a year to prolong their life. First remove the insect screens, if the windows have them, and wash them with a soft brush and mild soapy water. If you plan to fully remove insect screens at any point, first be sure they’re completely dry, and store them in either a supported upright position or on a flat surface in a well-ventilated location.
The windows themselves can also be cleaned with a diluted mixture of water and dish soap, or else with the type of ammonia and water window spray available in stores. A squeegee and clean, soft cloths can be used on both the inside and the outside. The cloths are particularly useful for cleaning the corners of the window and wiping down the frames and sills.
What not to do? Don’t wash the windows in direct sunlight, and avoid using anything abrasive, including newspaper, razor blades or scratchy solvents.
This is also an excellent time to carefully inspect the windows for any damage to the weatherstripping. Look for any cracks or gaps in the exterior sealant, and ensure the windows are tightly closed and locked, for the simple reason that this helps increase their energy efficiency.

Replacement Parts
If customers need replacement parts, matching touch-up paint or even help in figuring out what kind of windows or doors they have, the Andersen site features an online parts store and a parts catalog. Even if their products date back 80 years, they can still find out what parts are needed and order them.
However, many people don’t know the terminology for the parts of their windows and doors in order to be able to identify what they need, so we have that covered as well. There are quick guides available for understanding the parts of a window, a front door or a patio door.
Warranty Information
We offer a limited warranty for Andersen products that have been installed by us here at Andersen Professional Building Services. For a period of five years after the original installation, we’ll correct any issue attributable to faulty workmanship and bring the quality back up to our high standards.
Of course, the products themselves are also warrantied by Andersen, and it’s easy for homeowners to register their products if they know the product type, quantity and installation date. Be sure to provide that to homeowners once the work is completed. And it doesn’t stop there. If the home is sold, Andersen’s Owner-to-Owner® limited warranty will transfer to the new homeowner, providing added value.
We believe in providing the best service and the best products, as well as helping homeowners maintain their investment. If they — or you — need to contact us about an issue, we’re here for you! Reach us at www.apbs-az.com or call 833-533-2727.
