Ring Out Nine Holes, Ring In the New:

APBS Partners With Cullum Homes on The Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale

Cullum Homes’ relationship with Andersen Professional Building Services (APBS) began several years ago when the luxury builder was in fact-finding mode. Some time would pass before the two firms would end up doing business together, and then in fall 2020 the right opportunity presented itself.

Cullum was set to work on The Phoenician, a resort property in Scottsdale. The development planned there would involve taking nine holes of the existing 27-hole golf course and converting the land to 51 new custom home lots. The design goal was to create contemporary architecture that could showcase the scenic views of the surrounding area, including Scottsdale, Tempe and the San Tan Mountains.

Of course, to accomplish that, the right windows and doors were essential.

The Right Choice

Cullum Homes selected the Andersen Heritage line for the doors and windows in their custom homes — these products include multi-slides, hinge doors, window walls and casements. Aside from the quality and design of the products, the fact that APBS represented a one-stop shop that could make Cullum’s job easier appealed to the luxury builder.

The APBS install crew went out to the site and discussed the process with Cullum and the other trades involved to ensure the installation would go smoothly. Waterproofing was of particular concern to Cullum, and the APBS team wanted to make sure that the stucco work and framing would integrate properly with the Andersen products.

Carleigh Steele, Sales Consultant for Andersen Professional Building Services, explains the company’s approach to their work: “We stay involved in every part of the process. The fact that APBS is an Andersen-owned dealership and that we have a knowledgeable in-house install team has proven to be a huge benefit to Cullum.”

That level of support and involvement sets APBS apart, notes Preston Simonson, Cullum’s Vice President of Construction. “It’s not only about price or lead times — or even just the quality of the product,” he says. “It’s also about building a product that’s suitable for its application, understanding proper installation to manage water, and standing behind your work after it’s complete.”

A Solid Partnership

While it’s somewhat unusual for a builder and supplier to collaborate so closely on a project, Steele notes, “It’s really nice having everyone on the same page as true partners. We were able to make sure we were meeting Cullum’s needs and that everything would go as smoothly as possible during delivery and installation.”

Simonson appreciates the level of support that APBS provides, adding, “I feel our partnership is very good! Andersen was able to help Cullum solve a longstanding problem we’ve had with weeping multi-slide tracks. And recently, we invited them to come out and demonstrate how to properly flash and install a window. It was a great learning opportunity and as a result, we changed our corner-wrapping method.”

That’s what truly sets Andersen apart, says Steele — the supportive, ongoing relationships they maintain with their customers. “We want to make sure we’re meeting their needs. It’s very much a two-way street. We’re not just selling them Anderson products and then moving on.”
